Air tanks are not just ancillary equipment for compressed air. They are a great addition to your compressed air system and can be used as temporary storage space to meet your system’s peak demand and help optimize your system’s efficiency.
Benefits of using an air tank
Regardless of the size of your compressed air system, air receivers offer many advantages to your compressed air installation:
1. Compressed air storage
We mentioned above that an air receiver is an auxiliary compressed air device that provides temporary storage for compressed air before it enters the piping system or other equipment in the compressor system.
2. Stabilize system pressure
Air receivers act as a buffer between the compressor itself and any pressure fluctuations caused by changes in demand, ensuring that you can meet system requirements (even peak demand!) while still receiving a steady supply of compressed air. The air in the receiver tank is even available when running when the compressor is not working! This also helps eliminate overpressure or short cycling in the compressor system.
3. Prevent unnecessary system wear and tear
When your compressor system needs more air, the compressor motor cycles to meet this demand. However, when your system includes an air receiver, the air available in the air receiver helps prevent excessive or unloaded motors and helps reduce compressor cycling.
4. Reduce the waste of compressed air
Compressed air is wasted every time the compressor system is cycled on and off as the tank empties, thereby releasing the compressed air. Since the air receiver tank helps reduce the number of times the compressor cycles on and off, the usage can significantly reduce wasted compressed air during cycling.
5. Condensation reduces humidity
The moisture present in the system (in the form of water vapor) condenses during the compression process. While other compressor ancillary equipment is specifically designed to handle humid air (i.e. aftercoolers and air dryers), air receivers also help reduce the amount of moisture in the system. The water tank collects the condensed water into the humidifier, then you can quickly drain it when needed.
